“Taxing Times for Japan”, says Chief Economist for Hermes Global Government & Inflation-Linked Bonds

Government proposals to double the 5% consumption tax rate by October 2015 offer the most direct way yet of raising Japan’s tax revenue and lifting the Consumer Price Index (CPI). Should this happen, it will do little to boost growth and remove the deflationary forces in place since the late 1990s.

Hermes BPK Partners LLP (Hermes BPK), the US$2.3 billion* alternative advisory boutique and fund of hedge funds manager, has today announced the launch of Alpha Vault Managed Futures (Alpha Vault) with US$275 million of investment. The alternative investment managed account solution is designed to provide portfolio protection to institutional investors during periods of market turbulence through concentrated investments in the medium term Commodity Trading Advisors (CTAs) space and has been developed following discussions with institutional clients throughout 2011.

Proposed Treaty changes for strengthening the euro-zone’s inadequate economic union are, as Germany’s Chancellor Merkel had promised, “a step forward”. However, while suggesting speed limits for fiscal profligacy (structural deficits to be capped at 0.5% of GDP, and headline deficits at 3%), the proposals are not binding, and still look more a political compromise than the economic solution the euro-zone needs.
